Hott Hott Hott!

Yesterday evening the Wollongong Wargamers met for a game of HOTT (Hordes of the Things - I think...) Apparently it was the biggest ever game of Hott ever in the world, or the Southern Hemisphere, or Wollongong, or something...Certainly, by Hott standards it was a biggie...

I should point out that if the tone of this batrep is vaguer even than usual, its because I don't have the foggiest clue what I'm talking about, not being a Hott, or even fantasy gaming, aficionado...All I had to do was turn up early and set up some vaguely Ancient Greek looking terrain...A more technical game report can be seen here: Epic Multi-Player HOTT

I think we were playing a mish-mash of Hott and BBDBAV3 (no, sorry, not even going to attempt to unravel that acronym!) with 109 points a side, instead of the usual 24(?) and 3 players a side....

So on the left are John T, Dave, and Caesar, playing the Ancient Greeks, and nearest the camera Geoff was leading the Da Vinciites, with Alan (whose face can't be shown for security reasons) and myself.

The rules for deploying in Hott seem very civilised, almost 18th century in their linear perfection...

My attempts to deploy in 3 battlegroups were met with much sucking of teeth, but pretty soon the terrain broke up my reordered lines anyway...

Not really knowing what I was doing, I simply charged as much stuff as I could straight towards the enemy. Again much teeth sucking, and I was advised to at least not charge cavalry across bad going...

Which was good advice as my first few charges were quite successful...

I had also managed to breakthrough around both sides of John's forces opposite, which I thought was a Good Thing - apparently not....

However my foolishness out on the flank where I could do no harm was overshadowed by graver mistakes in the centre...

Where Dave appeared to be having to work hard to keep afloat, as it were...

Meanwhile, back on the ranch, I still thought things were going reasonably well, all things considered, as John and I were going neck and neck in the lost units stakes...

Until he brought his God out - Yes, that's right, the Greeks had God on their side...

Who pretty much melted my forces away in a couple of moves...Alan attempted an omniscient Da Vinci like 'Hand of Man' moment, but it didn't stave off defeat!

Despite not really knowing what was going on, it was a really enjoyable game, with lashings of action, a real 'big battle' feel, and lots of lovely models to push around - what more could you ask for!

Just ordinary 'Hordes of the Things' v2.1. We discussed the heretical US HOTT/DBA mashup, but we certainly haven't played it yet.

"Yes, that's right, the Greeks had God on their side..."

Not God. *A* God. HOTT allows for more than one :) Indeed we had another on our side, but she didn't hang around long enough for you to really notice her.
