For this Sunday's Solo game its back to the North Sea during the Great War...
The gap in the German minefields in the Heligoland Bight were a frequent scene of shenanigans as both sides ordered in heavy units to protect or harass minelayers or minesweepers. For whatever reason opposing pairs of Battlecruisers have stumbled upon each other in the mine swept channel...
All ships find the range pretty fast:
The Splendid cats maneuver to bring all guns to bear, whereas the Germans, somewhat outclassed by weight of broadside, take the short route back to safety!
The Lion and Lutzow pair off, leaving the Tiger and Derfflinger to duke it out. Soon all have scored hits, with the Lutzow in particular taking heavy damage, but fortunately none to her propulsion.
At a closing speed of over 50 knots, all ships attempt to order Torpedo stations!
As the Lutzow evades the Lion, she lets go with the sting in her tail, sinking the Lion!
However, she has taken too much damage, and also sinks beneath the waves. Its up to Tiger now to finish off the Derfflinger...
Despite receiving a pummeling from the Derfflinger, Tiger launches two torpedoes at maximum range...
They both hit! Tiger is now alone to pick up survivors, then limps back to Rosyth.
Not my sort of thing at all (naval stuff has just never interested me) but can't help but admire the ships and the action:).
ReplyDeleteThanks Steve very kind. To sell naval wargaming to you, just consider how easy the terrain is to set up? ;-)
DeleteWas this action played on a 6x4? I have always fancied doing the River Plate situation, but would probably want a simpler set of rules.
ReplyDeleteHi Norm yes, well 7 x 4 - those Cigar box mats are pretty generous! IMHO Broadside rules are pretty simple (though clever) but yes for a WW2 Naval game I would highly recommend Sam Mustafa's Nimitz rules. (But then again I had a small hand in the play testing so I'm biased!) I'm also building towards the River Plate, but want to try it in 1/700 scale!
