Valour & Fortitude: The Shevardino Redoubt

After getting confused with Valour & Fortitude rules last week, we regrouped for a small game with a clearer understanding of modifiers and values in terms of numbers of dice rolled, and the score needed to pass.

Table set up:
Shevardino Village - two blocks of defensible terrain:
All set - some French Colonels appear to have ordered line - Grrr!
These lads are in Column like all good Frenchmen!
The French team - John and Daniel - waste no time closing up!
The heavy batteries in the redoubt exacted a heavy cost:
The French light cavalry arrived right on time
2eme Hussards!
Daniel on the left flank moved on the village:
Whilst John on the right focused on the redoubt.
By this point the French Heavy cavalry arrived and linked up the two flanks
With everything aligned, the French assault went in...
The Jaegers defending the redoubt routed in the first round of combat...
Leaving the gunners to fend for themselves!

We are all now feeling much more confident about using Valour & Fortitude. A much bigger game next week, then we will be in great shape to run the mega game of Borodino...

  2. Lovely table and action as always, it seems an ideal stand alone scenario for the 6x4. I dusted off my V&F a few days ago for an ACW game with their new lists …. A reminder that the artillery can seem a little under-powered compared to some systems until within canister range, making the redoubt position more interesting. The support rule also fits nicely to this defensive situation.

    I used measurements at 2/3.

    1. Thanks Norm for your kind and supportive comments. I didn't realise new lists had come out for ACW, must get downloading! Yes 2/3rds measurements was what we used orginally, and of course it makes sense for 15/18mm figures. But I believe retaining the 28mm measurements speeds up the game without reducing authenticity, so long as you factor in an initial 'bombardment' phase for the defender in a set piece scenario.

  3. Another superb game to look at old chap! Pretty decent scenario too. I've looked at the v&F rules recently and frankly got rather confused by the modifiers and round fractions up, or whatever Gervis stated. Too tricky for me at this present moment, rather preferring to stick with BPII as mentioned previously.

    1. Thanks Steve! Appreciate the support. Yes I got into a muddle with the difference between numbers of dice and scores required, but have that all straightened out now and loving the rules. Actually mainly you just add or subtract dice. Yes I love BPII too, when played in the right company, but I think V&F allow you to play a really big game quickly with a large team of players, which is my fave kind of game.

  4. So, you based the cannons especially for use in the Redoute?

    1. Yes, so they'd fit in the casemates and have a wider field of fire than normal in these rules.
